Travel

You can reach Sydney by plane, by boat from the Island of Newfoundland, or by car.

Plane

Sydney has an airport with regular air service from the international airports of Halifax and Toronto. Currently both, Air Canada and Westjet have service to Sydney. When arriving at the airport, please organize your own travel to the hotel. There is a taxi telephone in the arrival hall, should there be no taxi outside the airport building. Taxis must be paid in cash and in Canadian currency. Because there is no Exchange Bureau at the airport, make sure you have enough Canadian dollars available when you arrive in Sydney. Fees are between 10 and 20 dollars from the airport to most downtown hotels and travel time is between 20 and 30 minutes.

Every year we receive several travellers who intended to fly to Sydney, Australia and mistakenly purchased plane tickets for Sydney, Nova Scotia.  When booking your flight, please ensure that your destination is indeed Sydney, Nova Scotia CANADA.  For your convenience: the Sydney airport code is YQY. Because the Air Canada planes from Halifax have only 50 seats, you should make your travel reservation early enough to arrive in time for the IMWA 2010 conference.

We also offer a pickup service from Halifax prior to the pre-congress excursion and also the post congress excursion will end in Halifax. Yet, there will only be 20 seats available for the pre-congress excursion, therefore this service is based on a first come first book basis.

Air Canada Please log into your ConfTool account to see your Air Canada Promotional Code in order to receive your air fare rebate. Click here to see the discount chart.

Boat

North Sydney is one of the end points of the Nova Scotia — Island of Newfoundland Ferry. If you are living on the Island of Newfoundland or plan to travel to the Island prior or after the conference you can use those ferries.

Car

You can reach Sydney by using the National Route 104 and 4 from Halifax or the National Route 104 and 105. In both cases, the regular travel time from Halifax Airport to Sydney is around 4 hours. Please be advised that you have to pay your parking fee once at the University campus ($ 1.00 per day).

Rental Car

Sydney has a number of rental car agencies. Due to limited availability we suggest to book your rental car as early as possible – yet, during IMWA 2010 we also offer a shuttle service between the Venue at CBU and the 4 major hotels in town.
